Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
