Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
