Powerful Winds Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens encouraged to stay indoors as strong winds lash the nation.

Intense gusts hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 properties experiencing outages and led agencies to call off more than 100 flights, based on domestic outlets.

The gales are impacting the complete South Island and southern sections of the North Island, per the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have released rare high-level wind alerts - the most severe warning - in core zones including Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been advised to remain inside, avoid travel, and make arrangements for more utility disruptions.

Broad Destruction and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss seems to be impacting residences predominantly in the South Island, although officials state that power was being restored progressively.

Local media have indicated that in some places homes have lost their roofs, whereas trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was lost his life after being hit by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a individual was pushed toward approaching vehicles on a street by a intensive burst, in a event that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights in and out of the urban area have been suspended because of the weather, and certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have announced a state of emergency, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Labor Protests Alongside Harsh Weather

These intense gusts on this day occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are engaged in what has been termed a "major walkout", calling for improved salaries and workplace environments.

But the intense climate has pressured them to alter some of their plans, with several external protests relocated inside or cancelled.

Like conditions are also sweeping the nearby nation, causing a high-temperature event to the country's outback.

Authorities have declared fire bans for fear of wildfires.
