EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
