Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in that campaign, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
